The Lamborghini Experience

The Lamborghini Experience

On Father's Day I was given lots of great gifts, but one that particularly caught my attention was a 'Driving Experience Day'. I currently drive a Ford Ka, so let's just say that hurling a Lamborghini - top speed of 230mph - around a racetrack is out of my comfort zone!

Whilst on holiday a couple of years ago, I went with my youngest son to a go-cart track. Around eight of us lined up for the race. The light turned green, I put my foot down, and the rest was a blur!I could feel my heart beating faster and the adrenaline pumping through my veins, as I yanked the cart this way and that way, straining ever fibre of my body to beat my competitors. The result; I came 8th out of 8! I couldn't believe it. "Dad", my son said once he'd stopped laughing, "You can't drive like you normally do if you want to win the race." Drive like I normally do...! He obviously hadn't noticed the 'supehuman' effort I was putting in!

'If the axe is dull and its edge unsharpened, more strength is needed, but skill will bring success.  'Ecclesiastes 10:10 (NIV)

My problem was I was so used to driving a certain way, that even though I put more effort in, the result was predictable. To achieve success I needed to learn new skills, because the skills needed to drive a racing car are very different to those needed on normal roads.

When it comes to my relationship with God, I am so grateful to him that he loves me just the way I am. Yet he doesn't want me to stay the way I am, because his goal is that I might become more and more like Jesus. That means change! It means that I can't settle for where I am now; I have to be open to learning new 'skills' - or upgrades. The Holy Spirit is our Teacher. He is constantly looking to upgrade us, to challenge us to grow into our true identity as sons and daughters of God.  He wants us to grow in faith, hope and love, to move in the power of the gifts of the Spirit, to fall deeper in love with our Heavenly Father. We are learning to be overcomers, partnering with God to destroy the works of the devil and establish God's Kingdom on earth. All in all, that's quite a skills gap! But the good news is that God is totally committed to making us more like Him.

What problems are you facing? How are you being stretched by life's circumstances? These will indicate the new skills and upgrades that the Holy Spirit wants to add to you right now. The issue you have forgiving your Christian brother; the person who irritates you; the situation causing you worry and anxiety; the habit you're struggling to conquer...this is the raw material God is using to teach you how to walk his earth as a son or daughter of the King.

So, buckle your seatbelt, put on your crash helmet, put your foot down and get ready for the experience of a lifetime!
